Jessica Bunn's Scholarship Award Speech made by Trish. This years scholarship winner is a 10 year student. She was in "The Nanny" in our 8th Recital BTV which is ironic because she "Interviewed" for Mary Poppins position in last years show. In "Decades of Dance" she learned to Waltz, to Charleston and to Disco. When we "Danced Across America" she was found in NY, NY, and she must have liked it because 2 years later in "Broadway, Here I Come", she started out "Thanking God She was a 'Country Boy'?, tumbled where the 'Sun Do Shine" but then ended up, once again, back in the NYC Subway. She was one of Cinderella's Fairy Godmother's little helpers in 2005 and then one of Tinkerbell's fairy friends in 2007. She was also a Pirate that year and both of those characters truly fit her persona. In "Everything Oz" She spent 'One short Day in the Emerald City, Met the Wizard and then came home to Celebrate at a Kansas Hoe down. When Charlie Found his Golden Ticket she couldn't decide between the healthy choice of Blueberries or Lolly Pops but eventually she said "I Want Candy"Though She Didn't get the Job she interviewed for last year, she did her best to get her competition to her first day of work on time in "The Wind Cries Mary", but as in real life, sometimes the stress of it all can get to you and she had to sometimes be reminded to not let her "Temper" get the better of her. Today she welcomed Alice Through The Looking Glass, Helped her dry her tears in The Caucus Race and Stood out as the Prize Winning rose in the Red Queen's Garden....These were the costumes her Mom new she'd be buying this year... Well, as per usual, we had a "few" last minute cancellations, after non returnable costumes were ordered, on Ms. Trish's credit card and dances were choreographed for a specific number of dancers.... here she was, early for her class, watching the advanced class practice, every week, so when Ms. Kristy asked her to stand in someones place, surprise, surprise, she knew the whole dance, and knew it well!! Now I'm sure many have guessed who this is by now but I cannot let this opoortunity pass without recognizing , for me, her greatest accomplishment... 10 years ago, as I mentioned, this child was a leader in her class. After class, she'd come up for her stamp and her heart felt 'Thank You for My Dance Class" and I would praise her for always being so sweet and angelic...only to see Mom and Grandma in the doorway shaking their heads with looks of shock on their face, saying "not at home" . Now this isn't really unusual and as the years went on and she got to feel more 'at home" in the studio, her teachers would sometimes witness a little of what Mom and Grandma were talking about. Not that she was a really bad, but sometimes.... But during the middle of last year her teachers noticed a change, and they came to me, not only in her dancing but more important, in her attitude. Well, by then I was pretty well set on last years winner but I kept this one in mind and this year....Not only has she been early to class with that positive attitude and willingness to help others but I have it on good authority this is Not just at the studio. But what we really love is when we get it right. At Thursdays rehearsal we had a dancer that was having difficulty with a routine because for various reasons, she had been unable to make it to class much. We quickly realized this number would need some extra work to be ready to present tonight. It was a beautiful thing to see the entire class rally around this girl and try and teach her the routine...but one girl in particular, stayed a little longer, and asked her Mom to take off work early yesterday so she could meet with her friend before rehearsal to work on the routine. I always say that this scholarship isn't necessarily awarded to the best dancer at the studio, it's generally awarded to somone who shows a love and enthusiasm for dance, and encourages others to do the same. Someone who takes at least 2 hours per week for at least 2 years and has expressed an interest in taking more. Now this young lady has been dreaming of going up on pointe and we're feeling fairly confident that could happen next year, but that means one more hour per week! Soooo.....for her dedication and enthusiasm for dance, her willingness to help others, not to mention the vast improvement she's made in the past few years, this year Scholarship goes to the Birthday Girl: Jessica Bunn! Please join me in singing Happy Birthday, because she Really LOVES when I do that to her!
